Eternal Investments

Reading about the utter destruction of Israel in 2 Kings 23:31 - 25:26 stunned me. The temple - God's temple - completely decimated along with homes, buildings, people, rulers and all the treasured possessions from within the temple. What horror. What trauma. All that David dreamed about for the temple and all that Solomon did to build it, and with one foreign attack it's gone. Plundered. Laid waste.

It reminded me of when Jesus said, "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nore rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also" (Matthew 6:19-21).

Even something as holy and sacred as the temple of the Most High God was laid waste - physically. But those things we build that are spiritual - our heavenly investments - no man can destroy.

I wonder how much of my treasure really is in heaven versus here on earth.

Lord, help me shift my focus, transforming my mind and my heart.
